What is an IB education?

International Baccalaureate (IB) is a set of international educational programmes developed by International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), an international educational foundation headquartered in Geneva Switzerland and founded in 1967. Like the United Nations, the IBO is a completely international organization that does not belong to any country. The educational philosophy upheld by the IB is Education for Life, which is represented through the following three IB programmes.

The IB Primary Year Programme:

The IB/PYP is an educational programme for students aged 3 to 12 with the focus on providing a complete education that enables students to be inquirers both inside and outside of the classroom.

The IB Middle Years Programme

The IB/MYP is a challenging academic framework for students aged 11-16 that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world so as to enable them to become critical and reflective thinkers.

The IB Diploma Programme

The IB/DP programme is a challenging and balanced educational programme for students aged 16-19, in which students are required to pass the unified final examinations to prepare themselves for university study and future success.

IB Educational Programmes

· Focus on Learner: Learner-centered IB programmes promote various healthy and beneficial relationships, ethical responsibilities and personal challenges.

· Develop Effective Teaching and Learning Methods: IB programmes help students to develop the attitudes and skills, which they required to ensure successful academic and personal development.

· Works within a Global Context: IB Programmes help student to enhance their understanding of languages and cultures, and explore on ideas and issues of global importance.

· Explores Significant Content: IB programmes provide a curriculum that is broad and balanced, conceptual and connected.

The Features of the IB Education

Different from the exam-oriented education that places exam scores above everything, the IB education places students at the center of learning. With the understanding that knowledge and skill acquisition are not the whole content of education, the IB education focuses on the mission of ‘person’ and encourages students to mind the ideal of cultivating their morality, contributing to the country and bringing peace to the world.

Unlike some international educational programmes that promote Westernization, the IB educational programmes focus on the inheritance and development of traditions. The IB students are encouraged to learn their mother tongues, love and share their cultures. For Chinese students, a truly ideal international education can only be achieved when they are able express themselves in the way that belongs to the Chinese nation.

Implementing the IB Programmes in Huijia School

The school was authorized by the IBO to implement the IB Diploma Program in 1997, which enabled it to become the first IB school in Mainland China that was allowed to admit Chinese students. Following that, the school was again authorized to implement both the IB Primary Years Programme and the IB Middle Years Programme and thus becoming one of the few IB World Schools in Mainland China that are allowed to admit Chinese students and conduct the full set of IB educational programmes using bilingual teaching method.

The IB education advocates the preservation of each country’s own traditions by encouraging students to learn their mother tongues and love their own cultures. What the IBO provides at the PYP and MYP stages is not specific syllabus or learning materials, instead, it provides a complete set of evaluation system and teaching framework, which enables Huijia to integrate the learning materials and syllabus prescribed by the Ministry of Education with the IB educational objectives, and conduct teaching and evaluation following the IB framework. At the DP stage, Huijia School provides students with challenging and balanced educational programmes with graduate exams following the IB/DP syllabus.
