22、What are the features of MYP at Huijia Middle School?
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed as a five-year programme for students of grade six through grade ten. It aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are life-long learners and globally-minded citizens committed to creating a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The MYP has been guided by three fundamental concepts -- Holistic Learning, Intercultural Awareness and Communication – whih are rooted in the IB mission statement. The areas of interaction provide the MYP with its unique core. They are: Approaches to Learning (ATL), Community and Service, Health and Social Education, Environments and Human Ingenuity.
23、How are the courses set in the Middle School?
Core subject areas include Language B (English), Mathematics, Language A(Chinese), Science (Biology, Physics, Chemistry), Humanities (Geography, History, Politics), Technology, Art, and Physical Education. All the 8 subjects are equal and are connected in an interdisciplinary manner through five areas of interactions.
24、What’s the difference between an English only classroom and a bilingual classroom?
The only difference of the two classrooms is that the instruction language is different. In an English only classroom, all the subjects are taught in English; while in a bilingual classroom, subjects are taught in both English and Chinese so as to meet the needs of the students who are of lower English level. But the contents taught are the same. Students will be grouped into different classrooms according to their English language levels for the convenience of differentiating.
25、What extracurricular clubs and activities does the Middle School provide?
In addition to academics, the school recognizes the importance of extracurricular activities, and as such, arranges a wide array of clubs and activities to encourage students’ development and creative expression. Teachers are involved in sponsoring the clubs and club activities, and those sponsored by foreign teachers also give students the opportunity to interact in English to further develop their English language skills. Examples of various clubs include: Art (painting, pottery, drawing, and photography), Sports (baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, swimming, bowling, golf, etc.), Drama, Science, Music, Dance and English. Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of talent shows, school performances and drama/speech/debate competitions, as well as many field trips and community service projects.
26、What are the qualifications of teachers hired in Middle School?
The school recruits highly qualified Chinese as well as foreign teachers, and all of them have a college or higher degree with practical teaching experiences. All the teachers are required to take IB MYP workshops regularly. Most of the foreign teachers come from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. And all of them have teacher’s certificates.
27、What do students who stay permanently during weekends do?
During weekends, the school will organize activities or field trips for students. The dorm teachers will also help them with their homework. Some of the students would take English course, like TOFEL.
28、How does the school communicate with parents?
Effective communication between the school and parents is very important. The school will email parents the School Newsletter regularly so that parents know what is going on at school and how their kids are. We also encourage parents to communicate with teachers and school leaders, too.
