Aims and Objectives
MYP sciences aim to encourage and enable students to acquire scientific knowledge and understanding, appreciate the relationship between science and technology and their role in society, and develop curiosity, interest and enjoyment towards science and its methods of inquiry. Students develop experimental and investigative skills to design and carry out scientific investigations and to evaluate evidence needed to draw a conclusion. MYP sciences contribute to the development of students as inquirers who are scientifically literate, caring and responsible individuals who will think critically and creatively when solving problems and making decisions.
The sciences curriculum at the Huijia Middle School encompasses biology, physics and chemistry, with a different focus on different years’ level (biology in year 7&8, physics in year 8 &9, and chemistry in year 9). Teachers develop our sciences curriculum and units of work based on national sciences curriculum syllabus and the teaching objectives and frameworks of MYP.
The following assessment criteria have been established by the IB for sciences in the MYP. All the assessments are based on these criteria and specific task descriptors need to be provided for each assessment task.
Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding, Maximum 8
Criterion B: Inquiring and Designing, Maximum 8
Criterion C: Processing and Evaluating, Maximum 8
Criterion D: Reflecting on the impacts of science, Maximum 8
